My top 5 Lead Generation Strategies

2 women discussing a meeting - 5 Amazing Lead Generation Strategies to Grow Your Business

Let’s cut to the chase…

in 2018 you want to grow your business?

And as a service-based business that means connect with and growing your lead list.

So what can you do now to start seeing more results in your email list size, community or personal outreach?

Incorporating more lead generation strategies into your business.

Now, this isn’t something that changes overnight, and in fact, for long-term growth and success, I would argue that it definitely should take some time to plan and implement. It is great to get an influx of leads tomorrow but where will you be next week if the quick fix doesn’t work again?

Lead generation is a long-term game. I like long-term games, it means that you can try, learn and grow rather than just succeed or fail.

If you NEED money in your business right this moment to pay your bills the best thing you can do is supplement your small business until it is consistent enough to sustain you. And there isn’t anything wrong with that. The need for immediate money can sometimes hamper your actual ability to grow your business.

Now if you are planning for your 2018 year of growth these strategies are for you!

My favorite 5 strategies are

  • Create Lead Magnet(s) that connect
  • Put Calls to action all over my website
  • Design my site with the user in mind
  • Engage and relationship build in Facebook Groups
  • Leverage the Traffic Driving Power of Pinterest

Now I’m going to go over these in detail, each one of these could be their own post but for the purpose of this article I’m going to cover some of the basics (feel free to ask follow up questions in the comments!)

Lead Magnets that Connect

Having a download on your site for people to opt-in for is a great lead generation strategy. But just any old opt-in won’t do.

You need a lead magnet that connects your solutions with your audience’s problems in a way that they can understand.

This means getting to really know your audience, doing some research, testing a few ideas, and figuring out how you can make whatever your idea is unique. Because I guarantee you that someone else out there has done 25 Email Subject Lines as a download.

But what can you do to connect with your audience? Make it unique and memorable for them.

I’ll use me as an example.

Instead of 25 Email Subject Lines which is very generic, I would test out some titles along the lines of 25 Surprising Email Subject Lines to Promote Your Services or 25 Amazing Service-based Email Subject Lines to get your dream clients opening more of your emails.

Now the idea is the same but I’ve connected my opt-in with a problem my potential clients are having. Promoting their services or getting higher open rates on their emails.

Calls To Action & my Website Strategy

Another of my favorite strategies is putting calls to action everywhere on my site.

Spoiler alert! These aren’t always opt-ins or buttons!

Say what?

Yep, I want to constantly be inspiring my audience and user to take action.

Which could mean all sorts of things like…

  • commenting on a blog post
  • following me on social media
  • clicking on another page in the user journey
  • sending me an email
  • scheduling a free consultation
  • reading older blog content
  • sharing blog content
  • etc

The list could go on and on. I like to provide a variety of ways for my users to interact with me because they may not be ready to schedule that free consultation but they want to make sure they find me again so they follow me on social media, or they may have a question that I didn’t quite answer in the blog post.

Every person is different so I really like diversifying and not relying on one basket for all my eggs.

Design my Website from the User’s Perspective

This strategy is wonderful and can help you stand out from the crowd online.

My website is most definitely about me and is supposed to showcase me. BUT I approach the design and functionality from the perspective of the people who are coming to my site.

I’ve done things like analyze if more people are mobile users or desktop users so that I can optimize that experience.

Or analyze what social media platforms are driving the most traffic and to where so that I can make the most out of that particular blog post or landing page.

When I write my content I ask myself what would my audience want to know about this particular point I’m trying to make? Especially if we’ve never interacted online before? I want to make sure I’m not glossing over important information and that I’m being clear so that people can connect.

Engage & Relationship Build

This is what makes running an online business fun for me. It’s great to want to put out content and keep updating my website with new information but when I work from home alone it’s important to find ways to grow relationships with others in the online community and genuinely engage with them.

I try to focus on being helpful and getting to know people rather than connecting with someone so that I can sell them something. Mostly because I hate when people do that to me.

And you can totally tell if someone is being genuine or just trying to make a sale, trust me. There is a better way to do it.

This doesn’t mean that I offer up my services in these communities for free. I just focus on the relationship part first and then if it comes up that there is something I can help them with I make the offer. But it’s only after I’ve gotten to know them a bit and helped them out.

Leverage Pinterest

Pinterest is another long-term lead generation strategy because the content has a longer lifecycle on this platform. That means that the work you put into it now will continue to pay off again and again.

It did take some time, in the beginning, to get my new strategy set up but now I spend about 10 minutes a day marketing on this particular platform and I continue to see more and more results.

You want to make sure that you have identified your SEO keywords so that you can go through and optimize your boards, profile, and pins with these keywords. If you need a place to start your research you can do the following:

Search on Pinterest, for example, “content marketing”

Then review the boxes that pop up underneath for additional keywords or ways to make your shorter keyword into a long-tail keyword like “content marketing tips” “content marketing social media”

Do this for different words you want to rank for. I just can’t help myself I have another example!

If you are a wedding planner you may start out with the list of words like this: weddings, brides, wedding decor, wedding centerpieces, wedding design, wedding planning, wedding coordination

Type each of these in and keep drilling down into the keywords. This will not only give you a great idea for what your Keywords should be it will also help you plan out additional content to create.

Why I deleted 1/2 my email list…

Does your email list growth feel stagnant? Does it feel like you get some you lose some but your email list numbers stay the same? Do you want to see more engagement with your email list? Try this...

This last fall I deleted half my email list.

It was scary and terrifying and even though I truly believe that numbers on my list of following my social platforms is the best indication of success… it still felt terrible getting rid of them.

I was felt like I had a certain amount of clout with the number I had.

But there came a point….

When I had to be honest with myself and ask the hard questions like…how are you serving these people if they never open your emails?

AND you’re paying for them to be on your list and they don’t even care.

It was time to do a little cleaning.

And something really interesting happened, I’ll tell you about it in just a second.

So once I made my decision I gave people 2 weeks to stay on my list. I sent two emails out to try and get their eyes on my email and re-engage them in my list.

Surprisingly some stayed. Some clicked the link to stay subscribed but the majority never opened the email.

It was then that I felt confident I was making the best decision for myself and those on my list. I never want to be clutter in someone’s inbox so I’d rather not just email week after week bugging you. I felt good about letting them go. Make room in my list for people I could serve and their inbox for whatever it is they needed.

So I hit delete. And didn’t look back.

I worked on serving my list and the people who remained.

It was about the same time that I was able to redirect my business focus and get really specific about how I help people.

And my list started growing again. It had been stagnant for a while. I’d get a few then a few would unsubscribe.

After I deleted the segment of my list that was disengaged my list started growing again.

I was starting to gain more leads who were interested in the content that I was putting out!

This was huge for me because while you don’t need a huge list to be successful you do need people who engage with the content you are sharing and not just ignoring or deleting without opening your email.

Letting go of the clutter really helped me mentally get more clarity around my brand. It’s position in the online space and how I can serve the community better!

So I want to hear from you, have you had an experience where you let go of clutter and saw BIG improvement in your direction & clarity? Let me know in the comments!

8 Must haves for your service-based business Opt-in

If you are an online business owner or blogger trying to grow your email list you cannot ignore your lead magnet. And your opt-in can't just be any old thing you have lying around it needs to be epic. Read my post on the 8 must haves for your lead magnet and grow your email list!

Your opt-in is a really important and powerful piece of your marketing funnel.

It is your first opportunity to make a promise and fulfill it for your audience.

You don’t want to mess this up because it is important to build trust with your potential clients in your funnel.

So what MUST your opt-in have?

Solve the problem and be specific

First off you need to fulfill the promise you made in exchange for them being on your list. Make sure that your free resource is complete and fulfills whatever you claim in your opt-in marketing.

And don’t wait to deliver your opt-in. Make sure your email service sends it immediately.

I can’t tell you HOW frustrating it is to opt-in and then it takes 20minutes or days to show up and by then I’ve forgotten why I wanted it in the first place.

And why you are developing your opt-in you need to make sure that you are being specific as to what problem you are solving. Trying to create an opt-in with too many things can be not over overwhelming for you but also for the person receiving the opt-in.

Has to be valuable

Just because you are making something free does not mean it shouldn’t offer value to your audience. Your quality should be as high for your free content as it is for your paid content.

This builds trust and positions your expertise in the minds of your audience.

Plus you get to hear people say things like… “If you are giving this away for free I can’t imagine what working with you is like!”

How awesome would that be?

Make it consumable

Now, this goes back to everything you create. Making sure the quality of everything you put out is easy to watch/read/engage with and that you are proud of it.

This may mean adjusting the freebie to include a just a section of your ebook that provides a quick win for your audience rather than the full 10 chapter book.

You can make this an upgrade for people rather than overwhelming your people and giving them more than they can chew. Think small bite rather than a full meal!

It needs to be in alignment

Not only in alignment with your brand but your current and future products. This may mean that you have to completely start a new freebie when you make a shift in your business direction or just make small adjustments.

You do not want to lean on freebies that no longer support your mission or direction. This will not be helpful for you or your audience if you are bringing people into your funnel who need help with something you no longer do or provide.

Always go back to value. Are you providing value for your audience in a way that supports your goals as a business owner?

It has to be ACTIONABLE

Your freebie doesn’t just need to teach it needs to give actionable steps for your audience to help reach their goals. Just giving a list of smoothie flavors and why they help with whatever problem they are having isn’t going to help them to make the smoothies or incorporate them into their daily life.

So make sure you provide the action steps to help them get from where they are to where they want to be.

You need to make sure it is based on what your audience is currently struggling with

This is where a lot of freebies fail. It is that they are positioned incorrectly for their audience. Either their marketing message isn’t showcasing the correct time that the audience will need it. Or the freebie isn’t highlighting the benefits of the freebie in a way that connects the problem with your solution.

Deliver on the promise

This is so important that you deliver on whatever claim you are making. If you don’t you’ll disappoint and lose that lead that you have gained.

When you are laying out your freebie and your marketing content for that freebie make sure that you can deliver on the promise.

Yes, often you see people relying on the specific results of the freebie you are getting as the only marketing promise. and while it is fun to post really AMAZING results like getting fully booked in a program in 24 hours with this freebie.

Well, you can’t make that claim because everyone is different, every business is different, and every audience is different.

You can talk about that claim but you need to make sure that you are making a deliverable promise. Like teaching you the exact steps that you took to use this freebie and get booked.

NO FLUFF

I repeat! No fluff. There is just too much information out there for you to be putting out fluffy content.

Make sure that not only are you distilling your content down to the most powerful information but you are also putting your own perspective/thoughts/ideas in it to make it unique.

This is the secret to making it stand out from the sea of sameness online. Putting YOU into your content through your stories and your writing style.

Now I’d like to hear from you! What is your biggest takeaway from this article? What do you feel like your opt-in must have to generate leads for your online business?

Why you have to go beyond your opt-in for lead generation

Are you an online entrepreneur? Do you want more leads for your business so that you can grow in 2018? Then you need to know why you have to go beyond your opt-in or lead magnet and create a nurturing funnel.

Lead magnets? Opt-ins? Content upgrades???

Where does it end?

Just kidding!

Your opt-in, or however you refer to it, is your first step in gathering a list of leads for your online business. When you are looking to generate HOT leads for your business your opt-in acts as a way to gather these leads for your online business and help nurture them.

Sow where do you start lead generation for your online business?

Your opt-in is the first step

But having your opt-in in place is really just the starting point. It acts as a gateway for your business. Allowing people who are interested in what you do and what you have to say take action in getting to know you better.

Thus generating leads for your business.

But it isn’t the final step.

You’ve got to go beyond your opt-in to really create a lasting connection and nurture those leads.

If you are unfamiliar with this or just setting up your first opt-in you may be thinking… What comes next?

The answer which we will go into detail in just a second is a lead nurturing funnel.

Beyond your opt-in

To have a successful opt-in that grows your business and not just your email list. You’ve got to have a plan for how you are going to nurture these leads.

Let’s break down what a lead nurturing sales funnel is.

It lets your email list signups get to know you.

It keeps you top of mind for the people who are interested in your services.

5 characteristics of a nurturing email funnel

Encourages engagement

This may seem obvious as you are reading it but it is truly something that every single funnel should start with at the base.

How can I encourage engagement with my list through this funnel/email?

It’s so important to the long-term success of your funnel that you start from a place of engagement.

This really helps nurture your list and gets them to take action by interacting with you.

Provides value

Your leads are on your list for value!

Therefore a nurturing funnel will continue giving value so that you build the relationship with hot leads on your list.

Some quick notes on value…

People find value in all kinds of places. It doesn’t always need to be a long how-to email in your funnel.

In fact, I encourage you to think of ways to provide quick wins or boil your value into a story with a single focus or action step.

Just think about your own inbox…. all those emails waiting. Sometimes just being able to provide a quick singular focus is just the value your audience needs.

I’m also not saying to forget longer emails when necessary but try to mix it up.

Position yourself as the expert on their problem

This is a great opportunity for you to position you in their eyes as the expert able to solve their problem. If you don’t know where to start understanding your audience and their problems check out my Free Market Research Master Plan kit to get you started and on your way to digging deep into what your audience is looking for.

Write emails on the subject and talk about industry trends and how they related to your subscriber’s problem.

This also provides another layer of value to the lead. They are actively looking for someone to be the expert…to learn from or to hire and your job is to showcase yourself in that way through your lead nurturing funnel.

Talk about the problem you solve and then pitch your services.

Keeps you top of mind

Another characteristic of a lead nurturing funnel is that it keeps you on the top of your audience’s mind. Now, this isn’t because you are SPAMMING the heck out of their inbox but rather you are strategically showing up in their inbox and providing support and value.

You’ve heard this before. People can’t buy from you if they don’t know you exist. This is also true that they can’t buy from you if they can’t remember how to find you or even remember what the name of your business was because they got busy and closed the tab on your website.

Having the funnel in place also helps keep you from spamming or ghosting out on your subscribers it keeps you consistently showing up.

Builds trust

Your lead funnel also helps you build trust with your leads. And building trust is an essential part of relationship building for your business.

If you don’t have the persons trust they will most likely move on. So a good nurturing funnel focuses on that as well.

And this is even more important nowadays. I am seeing a shift in the online business industry in how effective marketing tactics have been working…spoiler they aren’t there are several reasons and I can’t go into them here, maybe I’ll write another blog post on the changes I see in the industry.

But anyway building trust with your audience is going to be a key factor in going forward. We as business owners want to focus more on building and growing relationships with their audience rather than just blasting them with information all the time.

 Now it’s your turn!

Let me know in the comments what your biggest takeaway from this post is?

Are you an online entrepreneur? Do you want more leads for your business so that you can grow in 2018? Then you need to know why you have to go beyond your opt-in or lead magnet and create a nurturing funnel.
