Become the go-to expert in your creative business

Written By: Michaela

To succeed in business you need to position yourself as the go-to expert. It can be hard and confusing to know where to start but I've got you covered.

Imagine logging into your Facebook having a bunch of notifications where people have tagged you to answer a question, notifications of people asking you questions on the content you post in Facebook groups. Getting on a call and hearing “I just had to figure out how to work with you.”

It would feel pretty great right? We all want to be seen as that go-to expert in our niche.  People recognize what you do and how they can do it for your and come to your for it.

So how can you establish yourself as the expert?

Messaging

When you want someone to come to you as the expert you need to make sure your messaging is on point. You need to be very clear on these three things.

  • What you do
  • Who you help
  • How you help them

Create content that illustrates how you solve the problems within your zone of genius. You want to make sure you are “showing” people how you can help them. For example, you are a health food blogger and you want to guest post on an industry magazine. This magazine is wanting to feature bloggers who make yummy and healthy breakfast smoothies. When your messaging is clear it shows the magazine that you could write that guest post for them because you’ve shown them through your content that you are the expert in that area.

Branding

Leverage your branding to establish yourself as an expert. When you bring your fonts, colors, logo, and graphics together in a cohesive way that helps you be seen as the expert. When you are putting out branded content you’re signaling to people that you are a professional and you are serious. This does include putting your logo on graphics to visually build recognition for your business but it goes much deeper than that. When your branding is in alignment with the what you do, who you help and how you do it people start to recognize that you know what you are talking about, that you are the expert in your industry.

Like I said in messaging make sure you are clear with your branding is essential. When all the parts of your branding; your logo, graphics, fonts, personality are all professional looking and in alignment with your mission and personality positioning yourself as an expert becomes easy. It becomes recognizable and easy for people to see and understand what it is that you are an expert at.

Social Media Platforms

Your social media platforms are powerful tools for establishing your authority online. And because they are sort of self-contained ecosystems it is much easier to get found on social media than hoping someone stumbles across your blog. Share your expertise along with your personality.

Social media is a fantastic opportunity to share not only value but your personality! Sharing bits of you is one of the number one ways to create authentic connections with your followers. So share yourself and your knowledge and use it as part of your strategy for building your expertise.

Grow your online presence

We’ve talked about your messaging, and your branding, and your social media so what the heck do I mean when I say grow your online presence. What I mean here is look for opportunities to strengthen your online presence. Depending on what you do already with your online presence this may be as simple as engaging regularly with your followers. Or it could be looking at your blog posts to see how you can build on them and create more anchors for people to find you online.

This could include things like

  • guest posting
  • building relationships
  • writing more blog posts on your area of expertise
  • sharing value posts through your social media
  • sharing client wins on social media

This is a weekly task I do in my own business. I always ask myself what opportunities are there for me to grow my presence? And then I see what I can find.

Believe in your expertise

Lastly, believing in your own expertise. If you don’t believe in your own expertise you will have a really hard time trying to convince other people of believing in your expertise. What can you do if you are struggling with believing in your expertise?

Focus on your zone of genius. This is the area that you could talk about day and night and the foundation for your expert status. Build your content and online presence around your zone. It will help you get comfortable and grow.

Know that everyone had to start somewhere and that the people you see online as experts were once where you were. Start believing that you can do it too.

Great blog post! It is so important to incorporate all of these aspects into positioning yourself as an expert. So often I see entrepreneurs trying to focus only on 1-2 aspects and then they wonder why they’re not seeing the traction they desire. Each piece is just one small piece to the puzzle. In order for it to be whole, all of the pieces need to fit together perfectly. ?
