Picture this – You wake up in the morning, grab your coffee, and check your email. YES! You’ve sold another product or received an inquiry about your services. The best part is that this all happened while you were sleeping!
Your website works because it’s selling what you do – acting as an employee for your business. You’ve carefully curated the experience that your potential clients or customers are seeing and it’s getting results. This all comes down to catering your website to your audience. Make them feel welcome so that they stick around to learn more about your business.
Today, I’m going to share 5 ways to keep people on your website. Because driving traffic to your website is only half the battle. Keeping users engaged and interested in what you have to offer, is what will ultimately, lead to more inquiries and sales.
Let Your Visitors Know Who You are and How You Can Help Them
When someone lands on your website you should make it immediately clear what you offer and who you serve. That way, the person viewing your site knows if they are in the right place or not. If they are, they will feel welcomed and truly interested in your content.
Think of your website as a conversation. Your homepage is the introduction – when you walk up and say hello to someone you just met. It should be friendly, inviting, and give the reader a little taste of what your business is all about.
Include an introduction at the top of your homepage so that people know what you do and how you can help them. No need to make this section too long. Just a brief description will give the reader enough information to want to learn more. You can always go into more detail on the interior pages of your website.
Include a Strategic Call to Action on Every Page
If you want to keep users on your website for as long as possible (and honestly, who doesn’t want that?!) this is where a strategic call to action comes into play. A call to action simply needs to tell someone what they should do next.
Imagine that you’re guiding a user around your website. For instance, if they land on the homepage, what would you like them to do next? Perhaps you want them to navigate to your services or about me page to learn more. Guide them there with a call to action.
Once they get to that page, what action do you want them to take? This might be the time to have them contact you about your services. Or, maybe, you want them to grab a freebie and get on your email list.
Make your call to action copy simple and to the point. Include a clickable button for someone to go to the next page in the sequence. Your call to action doesn’t need to be fancy! But it definitely helps if it sticks out on the page. Try using elements like a brighter background or button color to really make these action areas stand out.
Including a call to action on each page of your website will keep users engaged for a longer period of time. Making them more likely to visit another page, opt-in to your email list, and inquire about your services.
Post Regularly on Your Blog
Content marketing is a wonderful way to keep visitors on your website. Plus, valuable blog posts will help to establish you as an expert in your field.
The goal is to have someone read one of your blog posts and NEED to click on the next one. Think of it as binging on your favorite Netflix show. Where you can’t possibly just watch one episode – but, with your blog.
You can accomplish this by including teasers and links to other posts that you have written. Try including links within the body of your post, as well as, at the bottom using a related posts plugin. Doing both of these things will help to entice people to continue to read your content and, therefore, stay on your website for a longer.
One thing to note is that a blog is really only helpful if you post content regularly. This could be several times a week, once a week, or even once a month. Choose a posting schedule that you can stick to consistently. Or, if you hate writing – try creating content using YouTube or by Podcasting. As long as you have valuable content accessible, people will want to stay on your website for longer and visit more often.
Have a User-Friendly Website
A successful website considers user experience. A person is far more likely to hit that little x button on their browser window, if your website is lacking white space, has too complex of a navigation, or doesn’t include a call to action on each page. They shouldn’t ever have to question which page to visit next.
Having a clean and simple navigation, with only important pages in your main menu, is crucial to keeping people on your site. Overwhelming someone with too many choices is probably going to result in them leaving. Keep it simple by combining similar pages, deleting unnecessary or repeated content, and eliminating drop-down menus where possible. Keep your page titles short but informative, so that, people know exactly what information they will find on that page. Get started by creating a sitemap, using one of my favorite tools WriteMaps, and plan out how your website will flow.
Consider Your Visuals
Ask yourself, does your website design resonate with your target audience? If not you will have trouble keeping them on your website. Your niche needs to feel like you get them. They need to feel welcome, heard, and see that you can solve their problems.
All too often, I see business owners choosing designs based off of their own personal taste and forgetting about who they want to work with. Take a look at the photos, graphics, branding, colors, and typography on your website and consider if your audience likes them. If not, then it might be time for re-brand and a website design that is custom made for your audience.
