Tell me does this sound like you…
You’ve been putting stuff out online consistently, meaning you are posting regularly.
BUT you feel like what you are putting out is all over the place.
You can’t quite get the look to feel cohesive…
You have no idea how all of the stuff you are doing ties into your branding or how to make it cohesive.
And let’s not start talking about keeping it cohesive when you see all these different people doing cool things in your industry…
No, let’s dive in!
Cohesive branding isn’t something that only the mythical unicorn of online business has. Your business can have it too, promise.
Maybe you’ve even felt like you’ve gotten your branding cohesive but it doesn’t stay that way…
Be authentic
The easiest thing you can do to stay cohesive online is to be authentic to you.
Your voice…your style… your content.
Inconsistencies come in when you are trying to impersonate others in the online space because you think they have the secret to success.
Inconsistencies are introduced when you jump from strategy to strategy. Message to message. Graphic style to graphic style…
When you are staying authentic to yourself it’s a LOT easier to keep things cohesive across your entire presence.
Cohesive & Consistent don’t mean what you think they mean
A lot of people feel like when it comes to branding and consistency or cohesiveness that everything has to be the same all the time. Or constantly unwavering.
I’ve had clients tell me that they couldn’t use a specific picture in their branding because the colors didn’t match all the other colors they use.
Well, I’m here to say that having a social media feed where every image has to look the exact same as the one next to it is STIFF & BORING. And while it is constantly consistent a real-life brand has a human aspect to it.
So don’t forget that.
You can tie your graphics in by having similar lighting/editing styles.
They don’t have to have all the exact same background.
Streamline
Another way to stay consistent is to streamline your process.
Repurpose as much content as possible to keep things consistent across social media.
If you are trying to recreate the wheel for every piece of content you put out, your cohesiveness is going to suffer.
Keeping everything similar or the same across the platforms will help you stay cohesive.
Create a style guide
Another thing you can do to stay cohesive is to create yourself a style guide.
This document is like the rules for your business.
I know what it’s like to say, I’ll remember and keep things the same each time I sit down to make content for my business. Only to be distracted by beautiful fonts, colors, photography styles.
By having a singular document that you can keep it on hand to refer back to whenever you need to create something new for your business will help you stay consistent.
Keeping it cohesive
Keeping your branding cohesive does not need to be a mystery or difficult.
And I know you don’t need yet another thing added to your busy plate but you should spend a little time each month reviewing what you’ve been putting out.
Print things out if you need to…
But look at the whole picture as one instead of all the pieces as individual graphics/newsletters/blog posts.
- Are they painting a cohesive picture?
- If not what needs to be adjusted?
- Does everything look/sound like it is coming from one business or multiple?
Then after your assessment plan to make those adjustments for the next month.
Going forward with your branding
Keeping cohesive online when you see so many different ideas online is a huge obstacle that you are going to always face in your business.
You’ll have to be vigilant about keeping on top of your branding and making sure to review it regularly so that you can identify inconsistencies before they become a huge problem.
